ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was videotaped through a hotel peephole while undressing. The reportedly poor-quality video was confirmed to be of Ms. Andrews by her lawyer Marshall B. Grossman, who has threatened civil and criminal charges against anyone who has published the video. The video has remained as one of the top ten google hot trends over the weekend.
Voyeurism is the practice of watching others undress or engage in intimate sexual behavior. A national survey of 2450 Swedish adults conducted by Langstrom and colleague out of the Center for Violence Prevention at the Karolinska Institutet concluded that impersonal sexual activity like voyeurism closely correlates with negative health indicators such as separation from parents during childhood, sexually transmitted disease, tobacco smoking, substance abuse, relationship instability, and dissatisfaction with life in general. Almost 8% of those surveyed by Langstrom and colleague reported at least one incident of being sexually aroused from watching others having sex.
When the victim discovers the covert videotaping serious psychological harm can occur according to Simon. Simon points out that while civil lawsuits are the typical outcome, the penalties are usually insufficient compared to the seriousness of the crime.
